"I do feel like I know him,” she continued, whispering under the sound of the washer. “That's part of the problem. I've never ... I mean, I always ... Oh, damn it..."

"Theo?” Dante's voice. It sounded like he was at the head of the stairs. “Are you all right?"

"Fine,” she called, and started towards the stairs. As fine as I can be. I should know better than to ask for a man. Look at what happens. A total hunk gets dumped in my lap. A total hunk wearing guns and talking about slitting throats and waiting for me forever and a circle of Lightbringers. Lucky me. “Go get some more to eat."

"I'm done. Are you okay?"

"Just woolgathering, I suppose.” Theo reached the bottom of the stairs and looked up. Dante stood at the top of the stairs, silhouetted against the light from the kitchen. He looked tall, and just as dangerous, but he also looked ... Well, a little...

Lonely.

Oh, Goddess. Theo thought. There goes my heart. “I think I should go to bed,” she managed to say.

“I'm beginning to feel a little..."

"It's hard to take, at first,” he said. “I'll sleep on the couch, if that's okay with you." The sheer lunacy of the situation rose up and made Theo laugh. He was standing there in his black T-shirt and her ex-boyfriend's sweatpants, the knives strapped to his torso. His hair was mussed, and the cuts on his face were almost closed now. He was healing quickly. Maybe it was from being around her ... and maybe not. And he had just offered to sleep on the couch, like a perfect gentleman. Did he have to be a gentleman too?

Theo climbed the stairs slowly, feeling the cold slick wood against her feet. When she got to the top, he stepped back, slowly, as if he wanted to touch her. He had dark circles under his black eyes, and he looked about as tired as Theo actually felt. “Sure,” she said, finally. “That's okay. Blankets are in the hall closet."

"I can find them,” he said. “You go up to bed. Sleep well. I'll be here." She nodded and slid past him. He didn't move. “Turn the lights out when you go to bed,” she said, and heard him let out a deep, frustrated sigh. “Good night, Dante. I think I can trust you. I hope I'm right."

"You can,” he said. “Good night, Theo. Sleep well."

Chapter Twenty

The phone rang.

Dante sat up, blinking. He'd slept deeply for perhaps the first time in five years, and his mouth felt a little sandy. There had been no attack, not even a ripple against the traps he'd set. He heard her, then. It hadn't taken very long for him to be attuned to the sound of her voice, even upstairs in her bedroom, with its unmade bed, stacks of books scattered everywhere, and the ficus tree in her window growing green and healthy. Last night he had touched the sheets, wondering if she slept with that silk dress against her skin.
